Hiatus/Update

Hey all–you may have noticed that I haven’t been posting.  There are a couple of reasons for this:

1) Life and other obligations got the better of me, and…

2) I’m ruminating on a new blog project.

I mentioned before that I would be playing around with the blog format to see what worked best for me.  I’m guessing something wasn’t working, because I got a bit overwhelmed, even though I was only posting once or twice a week.  My thesis work and last year of grad school have been a bit much, but I’ve also been thinking about what I want to do with my web presence.

I’ve gotten increasingly back into tarot, and am planning to launch a tarot blog and read professionally on a more regular basis.  However, there are still things I love about fashion blogging.  I seem to have trouble committing to just one type of blog or website (I suppose creative monogamy doesn’t work for me?).  Therefore I’ve come to the conclusion that it might be best to consolidate my online identity into a single website, where I can bring together all the things I love and still keep them somewhat separate–without it costing me a fortune in terms of time, cash, and maintenance.

Thus far things are still a bit up in the air, but expect to see me posting about fashion again in the future, whilst also fulfilling my other blog hobbies (tarot, creative writing, etc).  I apologize for taking a hiatus and not telling anyone–I really didn’t have a plan at the time.  I hope you’ll all continue to stick around, and I promise to let you know when I’ve got something up and running again.  Until then, best wishes.

Help, I'm Alive (Surviving a Cold)

GLIMPSE by AVANT Magazine

Things that have been keeping me sane through a very nasty cold:

GLIMPSE (above).  An awesome AVANT Magazine fashion editorial/video (which, unfortunately, I can’t embed) set to Sigur Rós’s “Glósóli.”  Go, click, watch it.  I am totally in love.

Coloring books.  Disney Princesses + colored pencils = love.  I feel like a kid again.

Metric.  I am going to see them perform with Band of Skulls at Mr. Smalls Theatre two days before Thanksgiving.  YES!  I can’t even describe how excited I am.

Contac, cough drops, and raw garlic—this stuff saved me.  For more tips, check out Gala’s Magical Guide to Getting Well.

Pontypool.  If you haven’t seen this movie yet, go find it.  It’s scary AND it makes you think.

Buying plane tickets.  All my old friends will be here in early to mid-December—score!

Three days of chili—the best of the best—from my roommate, and corn muffins.

Matthieu reading to me, playing Rummy with me, sitting through first-season ER (mmm…George Clooney), and carrying me to bed.  Every night.

All these things got me through the week, and I am thankful for them.  There were probably more, and if I forgot what they were, I am sorry…my sense of time has been a little off.

P.S.  It has come to my attention that post comments were recently unavailable (I’m not sure for how long).  It’s fixed temporarily for now, so comment away—and I’ll keep an eye on it in the future.

For those who are ill, get well.  The rest of you—stay the course.

Explosions & Missing Pieces

Whoa.

Think what you will about Viktor & Rolf’s Spring 2010 RTW collection–but it pretty much sums up everything I feel lately.

THANK YOU, fashion gods, for providing visuals for the unruly state of my psyche.  Now I can actually see the emotional trauma.  Who knew it could be so colorful.  It’s kind of soothing, actually.

…and that explains that.  Sort of.

You’re probably thinking, “What the fuck?”

Exactly.

A Note on Friendship

6331_558239601604_40303544_33184689_5068601_n

With so little time to blog, I thought I’d skip wardrobe this week (lest it overwhelm my content).  I’ve been pretty lonely lately, so I thought instead I’d take the opportunity to appreciate the best of my friends.  Call me one of the guys if you will, and maybe I am, but these are my four favorite people.  They need not be named, for reasons of transcendence.  When they’re not around, I miss them, and also, little bits of my brain start falling out.  They have, in different ways, keep me sane, happy, and motivated for the past four years, and if I could get them all in one room, I’d be a little closer to happiness–or at least die laughing.  Here’s hoping.  Here’s to them.

Thanks for being awesome.  Drop by more often, will you?

Twenty-Fourth Birthday

Sunday was my birthday, which consisted of a (somewhat obscure) Disney movie party–good friends, homemade raspberry cream cheese pie, cupcakes, too much popcorn, Sleeping Beauty, and The Great Mouse Detective.  We ran out of time to watch The Rescuers, which will go down soon (hopefully followed by many, many more).

What I got for my birthday:

An awesome external hard-drive (1 terabyte!) from Matthieu
Flowers and other little goodies from my mom
Delicious chocolate cupcakes with homemade frosting and edible flowers from Sarah
Silver heart-shaped pendant/necklace from Teresa
Rainbow-y sparkly unicorn tee with rhinestones from my Aunt Kim

And, of course, the self-gifted (thanks to awesome relatives who treat me like I’m ten and still give me birthday money):

New Moo Cards (soon)
Second chinchilla harness/leash (so I can take them outside!)
The Paranoid’s Pocket Guide to Mental Disorders
Personal Development for Smart People – Steve Pavlina
A Postcard Memoir – Lawrence Sutin
Vacationland – Ander Monson
The Splinter Factory – Jeffrey McDaniel
Public Gestures – Matt Yurdana
Skin Deep–an anthology of poems on tattoos & tattooing
Vegan leather sketchbook/notebook
Lemon-shaped soap bar
Two leather wrist cuffs (1 studded, 1 snapped)
Faux mink vest
Several pairs of awesome black boots (incl. Sam Edelmans & Jeffrey Campbells)
Two bomber jackets (1 hooded leather, 1 tartan plaid)
Two military-style jackets from Forever 21 (1 cropped, 1 not)
Long winter scarf & fingerless gloves
More tights & knee-high socks
Various sweaters & layering pieces
Design by Humans t-shirt
Faux leather pants & shorts

…et cetera.  I think 24 is a good number, and I feel younger and more self-assured than ever.

In other news, I’m thinking of ways I can rework my blog for the coming school year schedule, as well as in terms of overall goals (part of why my posts have been sporadic).  I think a new posting method/schedule will ensure that the post flow continues steadily.  In the meantime, I’ll be cooking up lots of ideas, so stay tuned.

Dreaming of leaves and snow…

I’m back in Pittsburgh and have spent the entire day shopping online for my fall/winter wardrobe.  I’m so excited, I nearly forgot to post.  It’s going to be full of layers, blacks and greys, leather and denim, long sweaters, simple and fancy knits, bright tights, and multiple pairs of boots.

I’m so over summer, it’s not even funny–I can’t wait for the orange leaves, the wet ground, the cool air (and most importantly, new fall fashion).  Currently, I’m looking on Etsy for an extra long knit scarf that I can wrap and wrap and wrap and still have tons (like the green handmade one my boyfriend has–I’m so jealous).  I’m liking this (click):

Bold and bright, yet somewhat refined, and totally unexpected–I love it.  8 feet long!!  I’m also totally into some matching fingerless gloves/arm warmers, for practicality (and cuteness):

Honey Yellow Fingerless Gloves by ginaminda

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend.  I’ve been working on jet lag, shopping like mad, and thinking of other ways to enjoy my last two weeks of summer.  Ideas: ice cream, cookies, and countless other baked goods/desserts, friends, dinner date with the boyfriend, Disney movie night on my birthday, organizing my closet, chasing my chinchillas around the apartment, watching Dexter & various animated series, and sleeping whenever it suits me.  I hope you all have plans of your own.

And so the family tree grows…

…in an odd and entirely new direction.  This weekend, I met (for the first time) six cousins I never knew existed until a few months ago, when my grandfather discovered he had fathered a sixth (eldest) child–before he married my grandma.

Of course, this weekend my grandparents celebrated their 50th (Golden) Anniversary, which turned into a ridiculous 7-hour fiasco at a Vernon, British Columbia country club, complete with a massive buffet, full bar, copious amounts of wine, a live band, dancing, cake, and enough old people for at least three retirement homes. I don’t drink, dance, or talk a whole lot (though I do love to eat), but I survived the evening thanks to the company of Matthieu and newfound family members–who, I am happy to say, have proven themselves no less than brilliant in wit, warmth, and intelligence (not to mention appearance)–and I am rather excited to have long-lost cousins with such traits in my general age range (a first for me).  Not to mention seeing the classic aunts and uncles, cousins, grandparents, and extended family.

Today is a winding-down of sorts.  After a week of reunions, ice cream, beaches, games, and chats, the family has largely dispersed.  Tonight I’ll be spending time with the new friends, eating candy and preparing for the drive back to Washington–at which point I can probably say I’ll remember it more than fondly.

Another post on Wednesday.  See you soon.
